Quentin is moving to New York to start a new job next month, and he asked me to take a portrait of him in Dublin that he could use on his leaving party invitations. When Irish people emigrated to America the first time around they called their goodbye parties ‘wakes’ — as it was pretty much accepted that if you left on a boat you’d never be seen again. With this in mind, we decided to take the shot with vintage clothing and props out on the harbour in Howth, with Manhattan Island on the horizon. America is just that bit closer than it was back in the day.

GREAT photo! and the idea behind it.

Beautiful! Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteLove the tones in this. As an aside, what's yer general setup for a shot like this?
ReplyDeleteLove the pic. What a brilliant idea! But why's he looking at his watch? Is he wondering why the boat hasn't turned up yet?
ReplyDeleteMs Atkins, you are quite brilliant!
ReplyDeleteCracking stuff. But when are you doing my portrait? I'm not going anywhere or anything, but I am really vain.
ReplyDeletethanks guys!
ReplyDeletePrices start at €300, Andrew.
General set up for this kind of thing is to go out during nice light and pick nice tones for the clothes and props (Quentin chose those himself). I took it lying on the ground so the area behind his head was all sky rather than harbour. I took it on my dslr. (Manhattan is blended in later with photoshop with great care and trepidation.)
Excellent, Annie.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about the gulls, did you photoshop them in or did they arrive on cue?
Oh yeah, the gulls, I faked them in along with Manhattan.
ReplyDeleteIs everyone leaving for America? How's Fiona doing, I wonder? I miss her cheery take on the arts. And good luck to you with the design enterprise - I must ask you to do my portrait sometime when I'm feeling sufficiently equanimous.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's the 1930s all over again. Fiona's doing great, she's in Oregon with her hubby and they have a little baby now called Finn.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'd love to take your portrait as soon as you are equanimous, Mise.
As if I didn't have enough to spend my money on...well, maybe someday I'll have a proper Annie portrait.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Great idea!. Fantastic photo.
ReplyDeleteLove the photograph.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea.
I seldom leave comments on blog, but I have been to this post which was recommend by my friend, lots of valuable details, thanks again.
ReplyDeleteI do wish I could go to America...*sigh*
