Driving to work feels like a 90's video game in which I have to get across the land without bumping into anyone and dropping all my magic coins. One day I look forward to being able to do this without hunching over the steering wheel with a gritted jaw. Although, I will never listen to music, or go over 60km an hour, or use fifth gear.
Megan learnt to drive this year too, and swore she'd never have music in her car either. “Too distracting,” she'd declared. “Safety first.”
I was pleased about that. It's nice having a sensible friend like Megan who I don't have to pretend to be cool around. “Right,” I'd said, nodding happily in agreement. "That's us. Safety first.”
The next week Megan pulled up outside my house with Snoop Dogg's 'Bitch Please' blasting from a boombox in the back.
“But you said you'd never have music in the car!” I exclaimed, my little heart pounding in my chest.
“Oh," said Megan. "But...”
“But nothing! What happened to 'safety first'?”
“Look,” she said, giving me a reassuring arm-touch. “I promise I'll never, ever go up to fifth gear...”

5th gear and gangster rap, dangerous combination!
ReplyDeleteAh it won't be long until you're sing along loudly to '9 to 5' on the way to work. It'll be grand!
ReplyDeleteI've been driving for over ten years now and I still turn my music off/down when I'm doing a busy roundabout or junction. All the better to hear the wailing of horns and screeching of tires as I career across the lanes like I own the road! (There weren't many roundabouts in Bala when I was learning, so I've sort of 'made up' my own driving rules!)
ReplyDeleteI always have music on in the car these days; I find it makes me less nervous behind the wheel, especially on the motorway. I'd imagine my caterwauling along to the radio is terrifying to other drivers, though.
ReplyDeleteGo Annie! Well do I remember the days when I couldn't imagine ever getting out of the car at the end of a journey not bathed in sweat.
ReplyDeleteSometimes when I'm driving along, on automatic, not remotely thinking about what I'm doing or where I'm going, I marvel, and feel proud of myself for managing to actually learn to drive. Music and fifth gear present no problem either - sometimes I even do both at the same time.
It will all start feeling safer soon, promise!
Music AND the motorway! I think not!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement though guys.
You can tell the people on the motorway with the music turned way up, because they still have their indicator clicking away quietly.
