The Electric Picnic

I saw two acts play at the Electric Picnic this weekend, which isn't very many considering it's supposed to be a music festival, but I'd decided at the last minute that I only like music that's written and performed by women. So I saw Björk on the first night and the awesome M.I.A. on the second night, and that was enough for me.

The rest of the time I spent getting lost, talking to strangers, taking pictures, and making sweeping and sexist generalisations.

Ive been outta touch lately - hows you?

festival looks great - all that colourful green grass and trees...

pics are great, esp.self-portrait of your friend taken whilst driving... made me remember scary moments when making a mini-movie (filmed, directed by and featuring myself) in my dapper Clio somewhere on a sheer ice-clad road nr Dettifoss last winter. so, i am suitably impressed.

    take care, country ms

ps. David is somewhere in a hut in E Iceland these days. we keep missing one another with 'too late' texts when one of other of us in the hills!

  3. Hope you had a blast!

Are there generalizations other than 'sweeping'? I mean, a specific generalization seems a bit silly, no?

Good thing I didn't drive to the fest from Illinois to get my picture taken, eh?

  4. Love the pictures, Annie. How was the blogger's meet up?

  5. Not good, think we didn't realise how big the Body & Soul area was and we ended up wandering round looking for each other in all the hippy shit.

Hey Helen... probably not going to be back in Iceland til Christmas. There's talk of going for Airwaves but I think I'll probably be in college. Your pictures are great, love the latest one of the shadows.

Rimshot, I didn't realise you were in Illinois, I just presumed you were in Ireland. I tend to do that to people on the internet, think they're all in the same country as me.

  6. Annie, that doesn't sound like happy camping. What made you take up sweeping and sexism?

  7. Sweeping sexist generalizations are about the only things worth saying.

  8. In that case, it's a pity you didn't go to see Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley.

Apart from the two bands, how was the Picnic for you?

  9. At least you didn't gloat about how fab it was and only a cretin would miss it, like EVERYONE else is doing.

    am a little bitter..

  10. Well, it was pretty wonderful in fairness to them all. There was so much to do, it would have taken me a week to get through it all. And loads of nice foresty places to chill out when the crowds in the main arena were too much.

I even went to the spoken word tents and saw lectures and stuff. Wow, I went to a festival and learnt something that wasn't about remembering to bring toilet paper.

    Other highlights:

    - Meeting my family at the Chairoplanes.

    - Keeping my eyes shut all the way round the Ferris wheel with Eavan.

    - Cocktails in the sunshine.

    - M.I.A. putting on an awesome show in the electric arena. Me wanting to be her, right at the vert front in the very middle.

    - Meeting Damien Mulley and Sinead Gleeson and some other random internetty people.

    - Buying an inflatable mattress off a 7 year old for 5 euro, not realising it was his dad's.

    - The "quiet campsite". Oh yes, you might laugh, but sleep was ours.

    - Getting naked in the public showers and skipping the 2-hour queue for the private ones.

    - Hearing Bjork's ridiculous fake Icelandic accent.

    - Meeting my African dance teacher AND my cappoeira teacher and neither of them making me do really exhausting tricks with my body.

    - Eating biscuits with my peeps.

    - The Village Hall. Oh okay, I saw three acts, as my friend's band was playing there too.

    - Um, I can't remember anything else, my head is wrecked. Just having fun really. It was like a holiday.

    Lowlights:

    - One of our camping buddies getting lost on the way back from the portaloo in the middle of the night and taking 6 hours to find us again. It sounds funny at first but he didn't have his glasses on and was pretty fucked up by the time he got back.

    - Our friend Joe getting his wristband stolen off him while he was asleep in the van. Luckily they let him back in anyway.

    - Some dude falling off the sound desk at the main stage and breaking his neck. This may have been a rumour though, there wasn't anything about it in the papers. Everybody was also saying that Amy Winehouse was dead, so who knows.

  11. CHAIROPLANES - why didn't anyone tell me, I totally would have gone.

  12. Ah yes. Sweeping generalizations. My house is a mess. Perhaps they could come over here to finish up the sweeping?

Sounds like fun was had by all, other than the person who broke their neck. If they did.

  13. What a rubbish rumour. They should have said that Amy Winehouse fell off the sound desk and broke her neck. That's much more economical, with effort as well as the truth.

  14. At first I was like "Chairoplanes?" Are they a male or a female band?" then I realised it was a fairground attraction. It reminded me of Flirty's post about the fairground attracting knackers like a fly trap.

Can't believe I missed you guys in the Body & Soul area - we were meant to meet at the chill out stage though, which is considerably smaller than the whole body & soul area...

hey, plus there were LOADS of other women acts on - Bat for Lashes was a whole stagefull of pretty and talented women who I thorugh were incredible. And Ladytron was a stage full of slightly daunting black rubber/leather clad women who played electronica type stuff...

Can't remember what other women acts I saw now, but I know I saw others.

Was not into MIA at ALL. Bored me and I left pretty damn quick.

Funny different peoples experiences at the ol' Picnic.

  16. Hey Frank P. I was at the Chill out stage! Right in front of it, practically doing a little "find me, find me" dance.

I heard Bat for Lashes were great, yeah. I thought about going to see Ladytron but somebody told me their name was misleading and they were, in fact, guys. Kind of like the way the name "Super Valu" is misleading.

  17. on de wimmin ting, you could have seen electrelane - and half of sons and daughters are female!

I've seen the 'lane before and they're booooooooring, so you missed nothing, and we fecked off home before sons and daughters, so I didn't do to well on de wimmin ting myself. Missed Bjork because of traffic (but wasn't fussed anyway what with only really wanting desperately to see the fall) and I thought MIA lost it a bit in that massive tent. But perhaps that was just me being a fussy caaah.

  18. I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of tagging you

  19. Got to see Bjork?

    So jealous...

  20. I had a very surreal yet 'now' experience of reading your blog once a few months ago
and then seeing and recognising you whilst walking around the Picnic - it felt a bit like when you see someone from Fair City in the pub and flash eyebrows at them....and then feel foolish. So ..hello..
