The film course is taught in a building called the observatory, hidden behind the trees at the back of the campus. At first I was all like, the observatory? Did I sign up for some astronomy course by mistake? But, just as I was feeling smart for getting onto some kind of sciencey-degree, I went inside and saw that it's actually a state-of-the-art cinema and lecture theatre, and I got a strange wobbly feeling in my knees.
This whole thing is a dream come true for me, really, and I was on the edge of my seat during the morning's introductory talk, having a real biscuits or cake moment about which modules I'm going to take. In the end I opted for Hollywood, European, Documentary, and Early & Silent Cinema, and then of course there's all the production work where we write, shoot, and edit our own films — kind of like the course I did at the London Film Academy last year, but in more detail.
I got a scholarship to cover part of the fees for this, but it's Bjarni who's sponsoring me for the rest. He's drawn up a contract, and when I sell my first script he's going to get it all back. Until then, I'm more than happy to wear logos with his name on them all over my leather jacket. I think it's going to be worth it.

ReplyDeleteThanks grannymar, huzzah. Am really excited about the whole thing.
Wot grannymar said :)
ReplyDeleteBut what exactly does Bjarni have in mind by way of logos for your jacket?
That fancy gazebo's a little bit of Trinity that will forever be in Belfield. How did the pencil/laptop numbers break down?
ReplyDeleteFek off, Conan! Don't insult my (first) Alma Mater.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Annie, I'm delighted for ya! Don't curb your enthusiasm as they say. Stay switched on. Stay wired.
And glad to see the Observatory is being put to use - it lay idle when I was a student near there. (Not my fault, mind). Is the tiny little pond still there?
And, hey, there are lots of trees to sit under!
Annie, big conga-rats for your first day and best of luck for the rest of the program. A nice mix of modules you picked there. You will just have a splendid time.
ReplyDeleteAll the best!
well...laptop or pencil?
ReplyDeleteBiscuits are very nice at thos time of day especially if you are in college - no?
ReplyDeleteI drank beers outside here in 1994! When it was all boarded up! With the guy I introduced you to at Electric Picnic!
ReplyDeleteBtw I forgot to mention we also met them at the airport and swimming in the sea off Gozo. Stalkers!
So pencils or laptops? What did everyone bring?
You met that SAME GUY in Malta a few days later?!That is quite weird. That is VERY weird, in fact. But then again we only notice coincidences when they DO happen, not all the times they DON'T happen.
ReplyDeleteNobody had a laptop, it was all pencils. It would be like getting your computer out in the cinema.
Yes, it is strange to be Williams, a bit like taking on a new identity. Maybe I should die my hair and become vegetarian or something. Any suggestions? And a new identity would obviously involve a whole new wardrobe. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI've already told Dave there's going to be some changes now we're married. That's it for diets, and I'm not shaving again. And if he thinks I'm going to carry on cooking for him... He did promise for better and for worse, so I've spent the last month stuffing my face with galaxy bars and admiring my rapidly plunging bikini-line. Dave's such a lucky guy.
Well done on your first day in college. I'm glad you're all excited about it, although I must warn you; when I went back to do my masters after two years off from uni I was so excited about being a student again. But three months in, when I realised the monthly pay-cheques I'd spent the past two years enjoying weren't coming anymore, it suddenly got far less exciting.
And I've finally got round to adding a new post to my blog. Do you think I could win an award for the most tardy blogger?
ReplyDeleteWell, "tardy" Mrs Williams I'll fight you for the title! (Thanks for your comments Mary - I'll try my best to find the will.)
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming the namesake of one of our Ysgol Gynradd teachers is the lady formerly known as Emma Brown yo?
Annie - I'm so happy for you. My working days are presently spent daydreaming about starting university all over again. Make the most of it x
glad you are going to enjoy being a great filmaker! that pic on flickr by bjarni is perfect. x
ReplyDeleteThanks. Yeah, that pic... I was all like "DON'T take a picture of me!".
ReplyDeleteOshi abandoned us for Facebonk. And Emma, congrats on new blonk! And you don't even have Facebook as an excuse. What is it, real life getting in the way?
Haven't been online for a while and it's taking me ages to catch up so I'm reading the posts in the wrong order and confusing myself (sorry, rambling there). But you started today! Huzzah and good luck! x
ReplyDeleteThat's what that is! Best of look anyway; did you hear about the spooky underground tunnels beneath the Arts block yet?
ReplyDeleteGlad it's pencils, I adore stationary/stationery (I can never remember) too. You sound splendidly excited, really pleased for you.

Who is designing the logo, you or Bjarni? can't wait to see it
ReplyDeleteBiscuits or Cakes? Makes me think of Jaffa Cakes. What are they??
ReplyDeleteAh Jesus Annie. Howe good does it get?
ReplyDeleteNo. Seriously.
Can you please quantify precisely how good it gets.
With diagrams. And graphs.
And trees.
i watched a film called keane the other night and suddenly i thought the american film industry can actually make makestream sensitive films that do comment on their society and culture and just as it seemed to be getting towards the crunch - the credits rolled and that was that. useless. maybe they ran out of money or the studio got bored. the french would never do that. its bruce by the way. (i tried to post this on your film site but gave up)
ReplyDeleteHave never heard of underground tunnels, no, but will be checking them out first thing in the morning.
ReplyDeleteJaffa Cakes are biscuits. The name is just misleading, like "Supervalu".
How good does it get? I actually can't think of anything better than this. It's my dream come true. I never actually thought I would do this, am totally excited.
Hi Bruce, There was something wrong with my comment settings, it's fixed now. I actually think American cinema is in a great place at the moment. Of course there's a lot of Hollywood blockbuster crap, but some of my favourite films lately have been from across the pond. I liked that film noir stuff you watched when I was an impressionable kid, but really, these days, I want to write something I can understand.
