Nothing to be afraid of

I was hoping to have gotten to grips with contact-lenses in time for the festival this weekend, but it looks like I left it too late. Well, I'll just have to be blind then, because I'm not wearing my glasses, that's for sure. I hate them!

I'm not crazy about sticking little bits of plastic to my eyeballs, either. But I suppose it's something you get used to with a bit of practice — like tampons, I expect. Well, I didn't use them until I was twenty-one. I think I was put off by that Tampax advert that illustrated a tampon as a little mouse with a tail; "Nothing to be afraid of!" read the headline. Um... right. Because the thought of pushing a small rodent up there really helped me to relax.

But anyway, if you're going to the Electric Picnic then there's a blonky meet-up at the Body & Soul area at 4pm tomorrow. Be sure to give me a poke if you come along... I won't be able to see you.

  1. Annie, I too am just trying contacts out. They're a fecker to get in and out though. I was thinking of getting the laser eyes but I don't know about that.

  2. You're offering anyone who comes along to give you a poke????

I had my eyes lasered 2 years ago. I love waking every morning and seeing clearly. I would highly recommend it.

  3. Tried contacts a couple of years ago (have been four-eyed since I was seven). Hate them hate them hate them. Quickly decided that if it's good enough for Elvis Costello, it's surely good enough for me.

Couldn't get the hang of tampons either.

  4. You could try contacts with a tail for a while, just until you get used to them.

btw: The poke offer was a mistake. You'll regret it.

  5. Have a blast at the picnic... [envy envy] we'll need a full Bock-style account on your return.

  6. Contacts with a tail? That sounds icky on so many levels.

One must 'tough out' the irritating first week or so. It does get easier. I live in my contacts!

  8. Because the thought of pushing a small rodent up there really helped me to relax HAR!

Surely this takes the award for the most hapless advertising campaign in history.

  9. Tried contacts many years ago but found them really annoying. Kept getting bits of grit under them. And small rodents kept eating them while I wasn't looking. Actually I think glasses are a lot more convenient, and vanity is not an issue - I've never remotely resembled George Clooney or Johnny Depp. More one of those L S Lowry stick figures I would say.

Nice to have the choice - my 6-year dalliance with contact lenses was cut short by my corneas (most unreasonably) deciding to develop their own blood supply, which tends to make you go a bit blind. So I've been a speccy four-eyes ever since. Got more men that way though. Sexy librarian and all that.

  11. laser is the way to go, but guess if you struggle to stick fingers in eyes then getting them cut open may not be a great idea.

  12. I often end up blind because I have issues with my contacts. All my friends look more attractive though with my blurry eyesight - no wrinkles!

  13. I've worn glasses since I was about 7 , got contacts when I was 14 and lived in them for about 12 years until my eyes started rejecting them. Now I can only wear them occasionally & have to wear my glasses most of the time because my eyesight is so poor (going anywhere w/o contacts or glasses is not an option for me). Wearing contacts really killed my eyesight and made me dependent on them so if I had the choice to do it over again I would stick to glasses and then get the surgery. As it is now, I have to wait for my eyes to not deteriorate for a full three years before I can get the surgery & I am anxiously counting down the days.

  15. Only now reading about the blonky meet-up, I'd love to have given you a poke. Or an elbow, anyway. Hope you had a ball, it was a great weekend.

  16. Could be worse, you could've got the tampax and the contact lenses mixed up.

  18. Blonky meet up didn't really work out as I didn't realise the Body & Soul area would be quite so big. It was like arranging to meet a group of people that you've never seen in your life before "somewhere in Disney Land".
