I finally got my place confirmed at University College Dublin, which is fantastic news because as much as I've enjoyed working from home, I don't know how much longer I can chase my own tail around the living room for before I go completely insane.
I applied to UCD because when I visited the campus last year I spotted a student sitting under a tree reading a book. I don't remember anybody ever doing that at the design college I went to in London, and I'm very much looking forward to taking part in some of this tree/book university-campus action myself.
But I also chose UCD because the course, an MA in Film Production, is exactly the way I want to spend the next year of my life: studying film and making things up. Maybe now I'll actually get somewhere with my script idea, instead of chewing it into little pieces every day and leaving soggy shreds of paper all over the place for Bjarni to pick up when he gets home from work.

Be careful. When I went for my interview at Exeter, I too was charmed by the sight of a student reading a book under a tree. By the time I rolled up as a proper student, they'd cut the tree down.
ReplyDelete(There's probably an analogy about education under Thatcher in there somewhere, but let's not push it.)
At my college people sit around the lawn, under trees, benches, concrete walls, anywhere there's sun, studying all the time. I'm glad you'll be able to take part soon, it is one of my favorite parts of college!
ReplyDeleteWell that's just deadly. Congratulations! When do you start? Studying I mean - you can sit under a tree any day.
ReplyDeleteWooooh! Go, Annie!!
ReplyDeleteWhen you are a famous director/producer, can I come and work for you?
Oh. I thought you were picking UCD cos that's where your famous Truculent Horse went. Back in the day. When everyone in college wore big jumpers with holes, jeans and doc.s.
ReplyDeleteYou can borrow my old clothes if you want.
Congratulations on the place. As for the person under the tree. Are you sure he hadn't just been ejected from lectures for chewing and told to sit under the 'naughty tree'?
ReplyDeleteGreat news Annie! I myself am a big fan of college and even bigger of chilling out under the tree. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you guys. I start in September and I can't wait. I'm wishing the summer away.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am famous I'll take you all with me, don't worry. In a big bus with blonk-beds in it for all of you.
Truculent, thanks for the offer, but if I wear your old clothes then what will you wear?
I hope you didn't act too hastily -it might just have been Harry Potter or Mills and Boons' latest ...
ReplyDeleteYes, you must get a false cover so that you can cover up your chicklit with an intellectual look!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, we are sooo proud of you!
Well Done... and dont be too down on the reasoning behind your choice, Im sure there have been worse ideas - like, well my best friend is going there and we can sit together... and then in September, the best friend ends up in a completely different class!
ReplyDelete'Truculent, thanks for the offer, but if I wear your old clothes then what will you wear?'
ReplyDeleteWhy, I will wear yours!
Yeesh. A year at Belfield Tech. What were you thinking?
ReplyDeleteEh? What is Belfield Tech?
ReplyDeleteTruculent – you can have my Icelandic jumper. It's such a crap one it's already got holes in the elbows. I think it's more for prancing around Reykjavik in than horseback riding over the highlands. Not that I ever did that in it.
Belfield Tech. Where the kids who don't have the points for Trinity go.
ReplyDeleteA concrete jungle designed to suppress student protests and encourage the rampant alcoholism of the Deefers and rugger huggers who attend.
Dun Laoghaire College of Art has the best respected Film course in Ireland, Annie. Did you try them at all?
Well done Annie, congrats. I'm hoping to get on an MA in Literature Theory here, I've got 5 novels to read in Portuguese plus all the theory for the test in November. I thought of applying for someplace in Ireland or Wales too but the DOSH is the problem (I ain't got none).
ReplyDeleteBeijos
Congratulations, honey!
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing wrong with reading Harry Potter. Although maybe confiscating it from a child on a trumped up charge to do so isn't completely right.
Annie, big congratulations on going back to school. It is especially great as it is to do with your interests and plans. The reading book under the tree thing. It's an extra, hired to do it a few hours a day under that tree... What's the $$££ (where is the Euro sign on this keyboard?) damage for the whole MA program?
ReplyDeleteBooks are so overrated. I should know. ;-p
ReplyDeletePS - I voted for you!
That's funny--I was just looking into their drama department the other day...
ReplyDeleteJC: No, I didn't try them. The film courses at Dun Laoghaire are undergraduate and I already have a degree in visual commuinication design. And the courses at Trinity are MPhils. They WISH they could get me on their campus.
ReplyDeleteBrian... the film department is a part of the English and Drama departments, which is great because it means I can take some writing modules too.
Thank you everybody for your kind comments, and also for the votes for best lookin' blog. I'd LOVE my blonk to win that prize.
They probably do, Annie. If only they knew ya.
ReplyDeleteNuttin wrong with an M.Phil, though. One taught masters is much the same as another on that score, whatever they call them.
It's the quality of the tuition that counts, or so the academic in the house tells me.
Rotsa ruck with it anyhow.
You have a tail? Let's see, let's see!!!
ReplyDeleteExciting news, Annie. Always inspiring to hear of people following their dreams instead of just sitting around under trees all day! x
ReplyDeletekudos!
ReplyDeletebut it's not a real university unless students sit under trees with guitars and improv.
cool Annie, very cool. gluck with this and dont forget trees make paper, trees are really alive (according to Tolkien anyroads)... so no chewing paper under trees - gotcha?
ReplyDeleteMad
Anyhow, NOW I see why you left Iceland - too few trees to muse under...
Iceland misses ya! x
How exciting, Annie. We need to see more women making films.
ReplyDeletei wish you the best, sugar..tis a tough field you've chosen, my 3 sons are in the industry (behind the cmaera) and our girl (in front of the camera) said fuck it and went off to become a teacher :)
ReplyDeleteAW Annie, you're in so many Best Blog categories, couldn't you leave "Best Personal Blog" for me? And I'll vote for you in all the other catergories. Get all yer mates (you get loadsa comments) to vote for me!
ReplyDeleteBeijos.
Thank you all! And hello there Helen J. I miss Iceland too.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Annie! That sounds fabulous, I´m big on under-tree-studying too... although I went to collage in Hawaii so they were usually coconut palms (still counts as a tree if you ask me). And I'm working in film production, it is a great deal of fun! Best of luck
ReplyDeleteAh, Belfield... takes me back an alarming number of years. There were a lot more trees in those days!
ReplyDeleteHave fun. You'll be taught by some very good people, and possibly by one or two entertaining loons!
all these folk telling you to be careful. I did my post grad in film production in DIT I did a screen writing course with NYU and UCD.....I did communications in DCU...I work in IT in Monaco.. go figure... enjoy it, it's actually damn hard work, but great fun.
