Something a little less rappy

One of the things I like most about Dublin — which almost makes up for leaving my whole life behind me in Iceland — is being able to see live music every night of the week. Not that I've actually been to see any live music yet, having had no friends here to go with, but it's nice to know the option is there should a gang of people ever turn up on my doorstep and ask me if I want to "hang out".

I'm very excited about tonight, though, because I'm going to see Talib Kweli and Jean Grae — two of my favourite rappers — and Bjarni is coming with me, despite his favourite music being "death mega metal", or whatever it's called. I'm not sure he realises what we're going to see. At least, I haven't mentioned that it was a Talib Kweli record on the stereo that made him ask, "Can we change the music please? At least put on something that's a little less rappy?"

But it's too late now, huzzah, tickets are bought and I'm getting into my tracksuit as I type.

  1. PLEASE tell me you are NOT going out in a tracksuit!

    You'll fit right in.

  3. Something a little less rappy. Just hope he doesn't say that at the gig.

  4. You could tell him that the rap act are the warm up band for the death metal to be followed. When the gig ends feign a stomach upset and leave, he'll think he's missed the main act.

  5. What? Rap?? In DUBLIN??? I thought all the Dublin pubs were full of celticy/folky/rocky bands like The Pogues and Flogging Molly.

    I'm so disallusioned.

  6. OMG, Talib Kweli! I love walking around listening to the "Black Star" album on the ipod. He's a hip-hop prophet along with Mos Def. I'm super jealous, Annie, have a wonderful time.

  7. That's that music where they talk instead of sing right?

We'll go to to see something different when I turn up on your doorstep!

  8. Truculent: yes, exactly. You can also recognize "hip-hop" by the fact that the lyrics constantly remind you what the name of the band is, in case you forget on your way to the record shop.

Jean was cool. Talib might have been, but, um, I couldn't actually hear what he was rapping so I'm not sure.

Except for his name of course.

  10. Hope it was the black track suit. That would be hip. Oops... that made it obvious that I'm old, didn't it.

    Annie... I've tagged you!

  11. Ooooo live music is so much fun but you don't need to wait for a gang to come over, I often go on my own to things, buy two drinks and then look around for "my friend" till it starts. When it starts who gives a stuff and you still have two drinks.Result.

wow, what multitasking skills - putting on a trackie and typing. Did you use your nose to type when you pulled your trackie bottoms up ... or your ear

  13. Okay, I didn't actually wear my trackie, but I did have large hoop earrings and a Croydon facelift.

Jean Grae was awesome. The sound system was pretty bad so unfortunately Bjarni didn't understand the amazing lyrics and wasn't impressed. But the crowd went mental when Talib sang Get By — those of us who knew what he was on about, anyway.

Chaucer's, I think you're confusing Dublin with Doolin, in County Clare.

hey annie are you fan of french rap??and unlike regular rap french rap isn't the kind of music where people are talking instead of singing becoz when people speak french it already sounds like they are singing which automatically makes french rap the kind of music where people are actually singing.

  16. I don't think I've ever heard any French rap. What do you recommend?

I love the French accent. My dance teacher is French with a half-Irish accent, it sounds delicious.

  17. Why don't you visit Limerick some time? We won't shoot you or anything, and it's just like Iceland: no live music.

No. I just made that up, but there's nobody famous playing. Just a pile of real musicians.

  19. I'm coming to Limerick in September, Bock, to meet Devin.

Don't get me wrong, there is live music in Iceland, but it's a real treat to get the bands you like going there from overseas. Whereas everybody seems to pass through Dublin on their "World Tours".

  20. Ah Talib Kweli and Jean Grae was such a fun show. I too wished I was Jean Grae (or at least from Brooklyn) and went mad for Get By- my boyfriend and I don't know any other TK fans so we were like "Our favourite song is everyone's favourite song. Oh." I vowed afterwards to have a Missy Elliot-style tracksuit for the next rap show I go to so that I don't look like I'm in the wrong place though.
