A massive fire burnt down the whole of Reykjavik yesterday, I'm sad to report. Well, when I say "the whole of Reykjavik", what I mean is a shop, a bar, and a nightclub — so close enough.
It's a real shame that the destroyed buildings are the beautiful old 19th century ones. Why couldn't the flames have taken those big ugly concrete things from the 1980s instead?

So does this mean it's the end of Pravda?
That's really awful. Do they know what started it? - at least you cannot be blamed tucked away safely in Dublin.
ReplyDeleteAre you Amish, Annie?
ReplyDeleteOh, they were some nice buildings.
ReplyDeleteBut I kind of like that cathedral. Maybe it's because it was the only thing I could see out my window for a month when I was there many moons ago.
The view from the top I remember though was very nice too.
I think it was started by a lamp in the little shop between the kebab house and the nightclub, but I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteThere was quite a cool mural in Pravda (by Ari Magg if I remember rightly) but that was the only thing I ever really liked about it. The kebab shop, on the other hand...
I have a tattoo of that mural on one hand. The kebab shop on the other hand...
ReplyDeleteThat church (it's not a cathedral) is not from the eighties.
ReplyDeleteSure, the construction was final in 1986, but it was started in 1945. The building was designed in 1937, with the tower completed in 1974.
Yeah, they were just very pioneering and foresaw that it'd blend in with all the other concrete architectural monstrosities of the 80s.
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago when Sirkus was on fire it felt like my home was burning.
ReplyDeleteI was just down there and had a look. Quite macabre, seeing burnt chairs etc. all in a big pile.
ReplyDeleteI'd quite like to keep Hallgrímskirkja, but I wouldn't have minded terribly if the fire had consumed some of those newer 70s buildings around Austurvöllur, for example.
Annie, no! I love the Hallgrimskirkja!
ReplyDeleteNice post, its a really cool blog that you have here, keep up the good work, will be back.
ReplyDeleteWarm Regards
