Pobol y Cwm

Pobol y Cwm (or "People of the Valley") is the world's greatest soap-opera. Only it's in Welsh, so only three people have ever watched it.

It also happens to be the name of my funky new blonkroll, which I've rearranged to give more space to Blonks of the Week, of which there are now three. I'll update these every Thursday at 8.34, or as soon as I read something interesting — whichever comes first.

  1. *gasp*

I've been banished from the blogroll!

  2. Very nicely done, from the naming to the images, to the blonks of the week. I wish I'd thought of all that. And now I have I may copy you - or take it as a starting point and go somewhere dark.

  3. Don't panic — it's a work in progress.

I'm trying to put my three-dimensional people up first in case they stop speaking to me and all I have left is my computer for company for the rest of my life.

  4. Splendid Annie. My lack of wizard-like abilities in this area prevent me from copying you, but I'd like to. Great idea.

  5. I can send you boys the code for this if you like.

Although, I'm trying to re-write it in Javascript so that the pictures change when you roll-over them. I don't think you can do that in html.

I'm not sure what they'll change into yet, maybe nudey shots.

  6. I love it. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I've sent you nudey shots.

  7. Ooh, I look very classy (and also already nude, if only from the shoulders up) in Pobol y Cwm, thanks for that. I make that gormless facial expression quite a lot in real life too. But then I have arms in real life, so it's not all bad.

  9. Ooh, it's BEAUTIFUL... How did you make it?

We get the Welsh channel on Sky (I believe it's called 'Digidol') and have seen Pobol y Cwm!

  11. "Why the tatty '3 people watch it' welsh joke?"

Because I try not to take things too seriously. Including being a Taff.

Annie, I got my geek friend to show me how to add the right code to my template. I'm still figuring all this stuff out.

And yes, it's called "Digidol" — because we can't think up new words in Welsh so we just have to write "Digital" in an accent.

  12. Well, if you're offering, the only gentlemanly thing to do would be accept.

In return, I'll send you some naked pics for the hover job.

  14. Funky stuff.

You have considerably out-funked most bl*ggers. That sounds rude.

  15. That is one might fabulous looking blog roll. I'm eaten alive with envy... I'm torn between stealing your idea and thinking that it would be tacky to steal your idea.

I suspect stealing will win out.

  16. Very funky indeed:)

  17. To steal would indeed be very tacky in my view. To take inspiration is quite another thing and she's always inspiring is our AR.

I believe you already have a nudey pic of me from that photography project of yore. I thought it was clever how you made it look as if I wasn't wearing shorts but I wasn't impressed by the spindly finger you used to represent my appendage.

  18. 3 people? It's hugely popular amongst the intelligentsia in Belgium you know so you'll have to, oh, double that estimate.

  20. p.s. I got the change image on hover thing working on my brother's blog and I've been meaning to get it working on mine but no time at the minute (http://chasingdaisy.com/playground/spotlight/spotlightv3.html).

I think I was using code from Stu Nicholls' CSS Play but I've just seen this article by Mike Cherim that I'm going to try and find time to play with this weekend.

  21. Nifty new look! How do you pronounce the title of that Welsh soap? Each one of my attempts sounds smuttier that the next... To think that when I was 10 I proudly declared I was going to learn Welsh because I wanted to be 'just like Charles'. Ah the misguided and indeed misinformed yoof...

  22. Erm, than the last actually, said the girl who confuses left and right, as well as up and down controls on machinery...

  23. Yep! Agree! That's very swish! I like it. I like it a lot.

  24. Love the blogroll. Very swish, swanky and very impressed that you can do code etc. I have a friend who I email in normal language and he magically makes it happen.

Maybe I should start learning this myself. humn.

  25. How do you guys know all this stuff. I'm still impressed I can even set up a blog at all!

  26. My dream is to one day write for Pobl y Cwm. And I think there are more than three people watching the show, but there are probably only about three people who think it's any good.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ha! Púbbel í kúmm. Very good

  28. I can't believe you used the words 'crush' and 'Courtney Love' in a single sentence.

  29. Annie --

This is very, very, very sad, but I have been thinking for a few days about your statement that it is "digidol" because the Welsh are too lazy to come up with a better word.

    You're probably right, but...

Etymologically speaking, I think it's fair to keep "digidol" because "digid" comes from the Latin "digitalus." Like everyone else who fell under the power of the Roman Empire the Welsh adopted a fair amount of Latin into their language, so there would be a precedent. The suffix -ol can be used to express the sense of relating to to something (e.g., allan = "out" and allanol = the adverb "outside"), so the word would mean "relating to digits."

    But...

"Digital," in a television context, refers to the digits of binary code. Of course, in English, it uses the suffix -al, which basically stems from the word "all." In Welsh, though, that would usually be the suffix -us or the prefix cyd-

So, perhaps it should be digidus or cyd-ddigid or cyd-ddigidol.

If they asked me, though, I would probably go with cydrhifol, "rhif" being Welsh for "number." Or, I would go totally wacky and use cydunadim, "all one and zero."

    Yeah, I'm great at parties.

  30. Oshi: I forgot all about that nudey photo shoot! God, those were the days, being all art-school and crazy. You're joking about the finger-penis though, right? I can't remember that bit.

Pobol y Cwm / Tatty Welsh jokes debate: Sorry for making the fun of the Welsh. Lots and lots of people watch Pobol y Cwm and we don't say "digidol" because it's just like "digital", we say it because it's good and proper. Thank you Chris — and you're invited to next cyber-party anyway.

Thanks for the links Daisy. I've started putting the roll-overs up, mixing the javascript in seems to be fine. Need to watch out for these little ' marks though.

Ariel, Pobol y Cwm is pronounced "Pobbol uh coom". Although I have also heard it been called "Puddle of Come" by some Irish relatives.

Morgan, I told you that was a SECRET crush!
