This is the BBC...

BBC Wales contacted me the other day, they'd like to do an interview with me for a radio show about blogging, would I be interested? Ooh, yes, of course I would! This is almost as good as getting on Richard and Judy.

"You're a little bit raunchy for the Beeb," warns the friendly producer. "So we may have to edit some parts out."

Raunchy? I'm not raunchy. I'm a prude! The closest my blog gets to having sex is a bit of masturbation here and there. Although, I suppose that's exactly the kind of comment they'd have to edit out.

Yesterday the phone rings again, it's the BBC office in Iceland, wanting to know what time to book the studio for.

"This is the BBC office in Iceland" says a strange, upper-class accent on the other end. "We want to know what time to book the studio for."

"10.30 will be extremely suitable," I say, in an equally strange upper-class Welsh accent that seems to come out of nowhere, seems I'm neither upper-class nor do I have a Welsh accent.

"Oh dear," says the voice. "Unfortunately we can't do 10.30. Would 10.25 also be extremely suitable?"

Hmm, this strikes me as a little odd. Five minutes' difference? I mustn't be used to all this anal scheduling stuff since moving to laid-back Iceland. I pause to gather my strange upper-class Welsh thoughts before the voice at the other end bursts into giggles.

"Annie, you twat!" says the voice. "This isn't the BBC office in Iceland, the BBC doesn't have an office in Iceland! This is Birna!"

Arrfgh! It's my friend taking the piss. I want to strangle her down the phone line. But at least it's given me the chance to keeps tabs on this strange accent thing I have going on, which I'll now do my best to avoid at all costs during the interview.

Anyway, genuine studio is now booked with genuine BBC person, and all I have to do is select a couple of blog exerts to read out for them and answer their questions. Oh, what to choose, what to choose? All suggestions welcome, non-raunchy BBC Radio Wales listeners in mind.

Hi Annie - what a refreshing site. Was looking through blogsphere for recent updates out of Iceland and yours 'popped' up. Just what I needed to take a refreshing read from the 'crappy' blogs out there. And, I'm making a comment purely for mercenary reasons too: My mission is to get as many flags from all over the world on my fotoblog of Wellington, New Zealand - Iceland/ic visitors still eluding themselves from the other end of the earth... So, if you have a moment to check my site out, I'd be very happy. All the best with your Interview. Peter, NZ. http://petescam.blogspot.com

  4. I think you should just write a new post, just for those nice folks at the BBC. What are they doing faffing around in Iceland anyway? And how come they don't want ME on the radio? Oh.....Okay.

I am very disappointed to hear there is no BBC office in Iceland. There goes one career aspiration already!
Don't forget to post a link to the broadcast now, will you?
    Good luck with it.

  7. Well done! you should probably stop thinking about NOT talking about sex cos that will ensure that something entirely inappropriate pops into your head at the wrong time!

  8. Goodness me. How did this come about?

Also, the Make Me A Supermodel team were in Iceland last night and served as my insight to your world. They relaxed in the self same pool you once shared with Bjorky but tell me, how does the water stay warm when snow covers the ground?

It looks delightful by the way. The models, on the other hand, were pleased to be returning to London.

  9. Thank you everybody! Especially you Kav with all your suggestions. We decided on the ginger-vitis one in the end.

Peter, thanks for the comps, your photos are lovely, I checked them out. One day I hope to make it over to New Zealand.

Oshi, the water in Reykjavík is naturally hot because it's geothermally heated, so it's more a case of cooling it down. When you come over we'll go to the pools and you can be amazed in person.

  10. Oh, and it came about because they're making some program about how super-duper blogging is, especially Welsh people with blogs, huzzah, and then someone pointed them in my direction. Don't know who.

  12. Ginger-vitis is a good choice. As a fellow Welshie, I am very jealous but then I've always been envious of your writing, Childhood Sweetheart.

  19. Being on the radio is fun, you sit in a little room with padding on the walls and talk to people you can't see...like George III.
It's much like blonking except you don't need to know how to type.

I'm sure you'll have big fun, but if it ever does become tedious just lie back and think of England.

  20. Oh I love being on the radio. I've been doing it for much of my life. My suggestion is to do and say whatever you want. Forget the kids etc. Just be your normal self and you will do very, very well. If you speak anything like you write, this could turn into something more than just an interview.

If you have fun doing this radio thing, make sure to tell them to contact you again. Radio folks are always looking for intersting personalities and because the chances are good that they will call.

    Best of luck!

  21. Congratulations Annie,
This is great news and I look forward to hearing it.I wouldn't be too concerned about *shudder* moderating your posts. The Beeb may be all stiff (fnarr) upper lip but they want all the saucy bits.Really :)
    Great stuff outta ya!

  22. Let me know when it's on, and whether I'll be able to get it on the interweb.

I've done a few radio things, and my voice always goes up a couple of octaves. Especially when Nicky Campbell's in the same room.

  23. Devin's right, they need to be able to say they TOLD you not to be naughty but actually want you to go ahead and be naughty anyway. Mind you, if you are too naughty they'll be able to edit it out unless you're 'live'. Don't forget to talk about your photos! Icelandic tourism authorities owe you much moolah for the free pictorial press you give the country.

Send us the weblink and we'll be able to learn how to speak posh Welsh, like.
