The best thing about giving up smoking is that I look better. I really don't care about cancer, heart disease, having my legs amputated or getting one of those holes cut in my throat. Let's face it: those things will Never Happen To Me.
No, it's the health warning declaring that SMOKING CAUSES AGING OF THE SKIN that worked for me. There is no antidote. Not even drinking 17 pints of water a day. And those Clinique products only work if you've been eating them since you were seven. I am kicking myself for demanding that Swingball when all along I could have gotten repairwear anti-gravity lift.
The worst thing about giving up smoking is that I'm simply Just Not That Cool Anymore. I miss having an air of "I don't care about dying young" about me, a la James Dean. I miss standing outside with the cool (cold) kids at parties (although I tend to do it anyway). I miss looking nonchalant on my own in bars when I'm actually just wondering when the hell my friends are going to show up.
But besides that, I'm six months off them sometime this week and I feel great. Richer, cleaner, more beautiful and more fabulous than before. Just not as cool.

Sunglasses are even more cool than cigarettes. Cool ones, anyway. And cool hats are pretty cool too.
ReplyDeleteI don't recommend uncool hats though, or sunglasses.
Eavan says "the bigger the hat the smaller the personality" and she is The Authority On Personalities, so you could be right.
ReplyDeleteYes sunglasses are cool. Especially pink Diesel ones. Any sign of them?
The smoking ban will ease giving up smoking. I really don't believe that by 30 you'll be ready to give up going out. Surely it's only a year away already!
ReplyDeleteTo replace your lost cool, carry an AK47 and stroke it magestically at bars and parties.
ReplyDeleteI was always one of the squares who never thought smoking was particularly cool. Dying a slow painful shitty miserable death from various gruesome smoking related diseases, while some tobacco company shareholders roll around laughing on a big pile of your money just doesn't seem like a good deal to me.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Eavan says "smoking is cool" and she doesn't smoke and her dad's a doctor, and she's The Authority On All Health Issues, so it must be true.
ReplyDeleteSmoking has to be the least 'cool' bad habit I can think of - give me bad BO, nose picking or farting any day of the week.
ReplyDeleteWhen I see woman (men too but especially woman) sucking on the end of a fag and exhaling the smoke everywhere, I feel disgusted that I'm about to be anywhere near them and then I feel pity for them. I always think 'I bet she thinks she looks 'cool' like Annie talks about, when actually she just looks minging and cheap which is tres uncool'
Well done with kicking the habit for 6 months mate, really proud of you xxx
Congrats on quitting!
ReplyDeleteOh no Cath, I was hoping you wouldn't see this. Yes, I know it's not cool. I will never think of it as cool again. No matter what Eavan says.
ReplyDeleteTorn between two friends.
My inspiration during the year I spent not smoking was walking through Sheffield's Castle Market area for sight of these people you mention. Unfortunately I don't feel the rule applies to people who pay more attention to their appearance.
ReplyDeleteHence why I've fallen off the wagon! But Cathy, when was BO ever cool?
Didn't you do a course on how to quit?
ReplyDeleteI've been looking at fear of flying courses on the internet. But all it's doing is giving me a fear of driving: "you have more chance dying in a severe and bloody car crash on any British motorway..." etc.
Yes I managed another smoke-free week but holding the classes in the middle of Soho was a shit idea.
ReplyDeleteShit, I smoked two in The Gwydyr tonight. But only out of sheer boredom.
ReplyDeleteNerys sends her love. So does Sian.
